Richmond’s Ron Durham was a top quality full back who, after a horror start to his VFL career in which his Carlton opponent Jim Baird kicked 10 goals, improved to the extent of winning that season’s Tigers best and fairest award. The season in question was 1943, and it was crowned in the best way imaginable with a 12.14 to 11.15 grand final defeat of Essendon. In 1943-4 and from 1946 to 1948 Durham made 59 senior appearances without scoring a goal. He was forced to retire from playing at the age of 27 because of persistent knee problems.
