An honest and popular wingman, Ron Hines suffered the immense disappointment of being omitted from Carlton’s team for the 1945 VFL grand final after playing in the previous week’s preliminary final. The Blues duly won the match at the expense of South Melbourne. To his credit, Hines did not sulk over the matter, and continued to play for another two and a bit seasons, missing out on another grand final place in 1947.

Originally from Ballarat, but based in Melbourne with the RAAF when he joined Carlton in 1943, Hines was a consistent performer, if not always a first choice senior player, for Carlton in 58 games during which he registered 21 goals.

After six games of the 1948 season Hines crossed to Preston in the VFA where he played 16 games over the course of that year and the next.
