Footscray recruited Ron Stockman locally from West Footscray and he developed into a handy player. Typically deployed in defence, he played on a half forward flank in the 1954 grand final and kicked the only goal of his career as the Bulldogs accounted for Melbourne. After playing 73 VFL games from 1953 to midway through the 1958 season as well as scoring the solitary goal previously mentioned he crossed to South Melbourne and, between 1958 and 1961, added a final 23 games without adding to his goals total.
