North Melbourne’s Jacana recruit Ross Smith was a tough, hard at the ball defender renowned for the ferocity of his tackling. He was also a useful wingman on occasion. He was a consistently effective performer for the Kangas almost throughout his 224 game, 36 goal career which spanned the years 1984 to 1996. After an outstanding 1995 season Smith encountered the first real dip in form of his career the following season meaning that he missed out on the chance to play in North’s grand final triumph over Sydney.
