Roy Dowsing was twenty-three years of age when, having not played football since school, he made his League debut with Melbourne in 1939. A lightly framed wingman, he was a consistent performer, but only really became an automatic choice for the seniors after world war two. His form improved the longer his career went on, and in 1945 he ran second in the club’s best and fairest count. When he retired after the 1946 season he had played 105 VFL games and booted 45 goals. He later served as a Melbourne committeeman.
