After commencing with the thirds Russ Hodges progressed through the ranks at South Melbourne before making his senior debut in 1973. He went on to play 38 games for the Swans over the next five seasons, kicking 10 goals. He tended to play either as a ruck-rover or on a half back flank. In 1976-7 he played 31 VFL games and scored three goals for Fitzroy before rounding off his career in the VFA with Sandringham (17 games, 11 goals, 1979-81) and Kilsyth (15 games, 21 goals, 1982-3). Whilst with Kilsyth he was a joint winner of the 1982 Field Trophy.
