A solidly built but exceedingly quick utility who loved running with the ball, Russell ‘Rhino’ Richards joined Melbourne from Seymour and made his senior VFL debut in the opening round of the 1983 season. He regularly exhibited his pace on grand final day, when he took part in the annual footballers’ sprint, which he won in 1987. He remained with the Demons until 1988, although he only played reserves football that year. His senior career with the Dees comprised 81 VFL games in which he scored 43 goals. He finished his playing career by registering 12 games and 16 goals in the VFA with Prahran in 1989.
