Having played in Redan’s 1975 and 1976 premiership-winning teams in the Ballarat Football League Russell Tweeddale took his senior VFL bows with St Kilda in round two, 1977. An adaptable player, he impressed in his first couple of seasons with the Saints when he played virtually every match. However, in 1979 he was restricted to just seven appearances, and at the end of the year he was cleared to join Footscray. Once again he struggled to have an impact and managed just eight games and a goal to add to the 43 games and 26 goals registered with St Kilda. Tweeddale finished his senior playing career back at Redan.
