Melbourne recruited Scott Turner from Ararat in 1989 but he never managed to break into the senior team, and was off-loaded to Richmond, where he thrived. Playing mainly as a full back, he boasted courage aplenty, allied to great mobility and a pronounced attacking bent. He sometimes looked a little clumsy in his approach but he was consistently effective. He played 144 VFL games for the Tigers and kicked 33 goals from 1991 to 1999. He was forced to retire somewhat prematurely, aged 26, after persistent knee problems dating back to the 1995 finals series.

Turner coached Hampden Football League club Warrnambool to premierships in 2000 and 2001 and later coached his original club Ararat.
