Recruited from West Melbourne, Sel Murray was a fine full forward for North Melbourne in 108 VFL games between 1937 and 1944 and in 1948, during which he kicked 411 goals. His tally of 88 goals in 1941 was good enough to top the league list. He also topped North Melbourne’s goal kicking ladder every season between 1938 and 1942. Some idea of his prowess during a difficult time for full forwards can be gauged from his achievement in registering 300 career goals in just 73 games, which is the equal third fastest of all time.

In 1945 Murray crossed to Richmond where he played 13 games and booted 50 goals in two seasons. He spent the 1947 season playing for North Melbourne’s reserve,s for whom he kicked 123 goals to top the competition goal kicking ladder.
