After playing five games in his debut season of 1969 Shane spent the whole of the following year in Fitzroy’s reserves. From 1971 to 1974 he was a regular senior player, ultimately playing 61 VFL games and registering four goals. Molloy was a straight ahead type of defender who boasted great courage and determination. In 1975 he crossed to VFA first division side Port Melbourne for whom he would play 41 games, highlighted by participation in the 19.18 to 10.15 defeat of Dandenong in the 1976 grand final.
