Half back flanker Sted Hay was a tough, hard hitting footballer who almost invariably kept his direct opponent tightly under wraps. His 78 VFL games between 1959 and 1964 included the winning grand final of 1961 against Footscray and the loss to Geelong a couple of years later. He was among the Hawks’ best players in the former match.
