Stephen Newport made his was up through the ranks at Melbourne, playing in the club’s 1983 under nineteens team and then spending timer in the reserves before making his senior debut in 1985. By 1986 he was a first choice senior player. Boasting enormous stamina he was a tagger par excellence, albeit one who also racked up numerous possessions himself. When the Demons emerged as a league force for the first time in more than two decades Newport was a prime mover. He was one of their best players in the drought-breaking 1987 finals campaign and also played well the following year when the Dees reached the grand final. He was a Victorian state of origin representative against Tasmania in 1989.
Prior to the 1991 season Newport was traded to St Kilda where he added 39 games and 8 goals to the 101 games and 58 goals accumulated at Melbourne.
