A lightly-built defender who boasted good all round skills but lacked pace, Stephen Edgar joined East Fremantle from Melville and, after a slow start, developed into a useful member of the side. In 1988 he represented Western Australia in a win over the VFA at Subiaco Oval. In 1990 and 1991 he played 14 AFL games and kicked one goal for Carlton, without ever quite managing to establish himself as a first choice senior player. He did, however, play in the Blues’ 1990 reserves premiership triumph.
A knee injury requiring a full reconstruction effectively brought Edgar’s time at Princes Park to a close. He returned home to Western Australia and resumed with East Fremantle in 1994, a year which was crowned with an upset grand final victory over Claremont. Edgar lined up on a half back flank in what proved to be his last game of senior football and his 79th in a Sharks jumper.
