Less audaciously talented than his younger brother Garry, Steve Hocking was nevertheless an effective contributor to the Geelong cause in 199 V/AFL games between 1984 and 1994. He kicked 10 goals. Most commonly used as a back pocket or half back flanker he played with great verve and tenacity but littlef flamboyance. He is probably best remembered for a match in which he felled Leigh Matthews of Hawthorn in apparent retaliation for the Hawk star having done likewise to Neville Bruns. Never the sort of player likely to win best and fairest awards he was named the Cats' most determined player on four occasions.
In August 2017, Hocking was appointed AFL General Manager of Football Operations. He had previously served as Geelong's head of football.
