Steven Stretch was a long-striding, long-kicking wingman who made his league debut with West Torrens in 1982, having joined the club from Henley High. In 1986, after 60 games for the Eagles, he crossed to Melbourne, where he displayed consistently eye-catching form, and was a major factor in the club's rise to prominence after more than two decades in the doldrums.

Stretch won the Demons' best and fairest award in 1987, and played in their losing Grand Final team against Hawthorn a year later. After 164 V/AFL games for the club, he crossed to Fitzroy in 1994, where he continued to produce consistently fine football in 25 games over his final two league seasons.
