In many ways Ted Jarrard, who played 130 VFL games for North Melbourne between 1944 to 1953, typified the Shinboner ethic in that he was tough as nails, resolute and unrelenting. He featured in a North backline that espoused the same qualities, but at the same time he was a highly capable footballer who kicked and marked well. A regular Big V representative, including games at both the 1950 Brisbane and 1953 Adelaide carnivals, he was typically at his best when the stakes were highest. A case in point was the 1950 grand final in which North lowered their colours to Essendon and Jarrard was one of only a few northerner to do himself justice.

After leaving North Melbourne Ted Jarrard captain-coached Camberwell in the VFA for a time and later had stints at Fitzroy Rovers and Jeparit. He was included on a half back flank in the official Kangas 'Team of the Century'.
