After an aborted start to his VFL career with St Kilda  in 1911, when he managed just four games for the season, Ted Brown returned to the big time with Carlton in 1914 and proved himself a decided acquisition. His seven season stint with the club saw him play 95 games and kick one goal. At the end of his first season in the dark navy blue he played on a wing as the Blues accounted for South Melbourne in the premiership decider by a single straight kick. A year later, playing at half back left, he was one of the best players on view as the Blues went 'back to back' with a resounding 11.12 to 6.9 challenge final defeat of Collingwood. In 1916 he played in a third straight grand final but Fitzroy proved to have Carlton's measure on that occasion.

In addition to the wing and half back flank Brown played many games as a centreman, particularly during the early part of his time with Carlton. He was a gritty competitor who boasted considerable pace and was a sound, one grab mark.

After departing the VFL scene Brown spent three seasons as captain-coach of the Yarragon Football Club, in the Central Gippsland Football Association, following which he spent time with Maffra, Traralgon and Yea. He was a premiership player with Maffra in 1921 and Traralgon in 1925.
