Known evocatively as ‘Plough’, Terry Wallace was a pack-smashing, inside midfielder par excellence, making up for what he lacked in pace with immense grit, determination and physical tenacity. Hawthorn recruited him from VFA club Camberwell and he was a mainstay of their team in 174 VFL games between 1978 and 1986 playing in three winning grand finals and claiming the Hawks’ best and fairest award twice.

A contract dispute with Hawthorn led to Wallace crossing to Richmond in 1987 but his season was effectively ruined by injury and he managed just 11 appearances. A switch to Footscray saw him recapturing his best form and his four seasons with the club included back to back best and fairest wins in 1988 and 1989. The Bulldogs phase of his career saw him add a final 69 V/AFL games to his tally for an overall total of 254. He registered 123 goals.

Following his retirement as a player Wallace embarked on a coaching career embracing stints at Footscray/Western Bulldogs (1996 to 2002) and Richmond (2005 to 2009). His time with the Bulldogs was more noteworthy as he steered them to consecutive third place finishes.
