Tom Mullens was a handy key position forward who could boast the distinction of appearing in premiership-winning teams in his first two seasons as a senior footballer. In 1923 he helped Footscray to a VFA grand final win over Port Melbourne while in the following year’s flag decider he contributed five goals to an 11.11 to 3.4 defeat of Williamstown. His two season stint in the VFA saw him make 36 senior appearances and kick 97 goals.
Mullens continued with Footscray when the club was admitted to the VFL in 1925. After playing seven games and scoring 11 goals that year he crossed to Carlton in 1926 where he added a final seven appearances and 10 goals.
