Possessing electrifying pace and crisp, clean ball handling skills, Tony Malekellis could be a match winner, but he was also prone to inconsistency. After struggling to make his mark at Geelong (14 games, 12 goals, 1990-1) and Sydney - where he had a falling out with the club hierarchy - (five games, three goals, 1993), he crossed to Port Adelaide where, initially at least, he produced football commensurate with his ability. In 1994 he was runner-up in the Magarey Medal count.

Malakellis played 70 SANFL games and kicked 81 goals for the Magpies between 1994 and 1998. He was a member of premiership-winning teams in 1994 against Woodville West Torrens and 1995 against Central District, producing an especially effervescent performance in the latter match.
