Edwards commenced his league football career with West Adelaide, but it is for his exploits in the AFL with Adelaide that he will be best remembered. He made his Crows debut in 1995 as a defender, but struggled to hold down a regular place in the side until tried as an on-baller by Malcolm Blight. A member of the Crows's 1997 and 1998 flag-winning combinations, Edwards was sometimes described in terms like 'unsung hero' or 'quiet achiever' but by the early years of the new century his importance to the Adelaide cause was almost unrivalled.

Energetic and forceful, and a damaging player in the forward lines on occasion, his consistency was emphasised with regular high finishes in the Crows' best and fairest voting, including three second places. In 2009 he became just the fourth Adelaide player to amass 300 AFL games, and he finished his career at the end of the 2010 season with a total of 321, second only behind long-time teammate Andrew McLeod.

Tyson Edwards also played 42 SANFL games for West Adelaide as well as 2 games of International Rules against Ireland.
