A wingman from South Yarra, Val Robertson specialised in making long, weaving runs with the ball, the type of feat which was probably lauded by spectators more than any other at the time. After a brief, seven game stint with South Melbourne in 1898-9 he came into his own after crossing to St Kilda, where he added 59 VFL games from 1900 to 1904. He failed to register a goal with either of his clubs.
