Melbourne's Vin Coutie was regarded as one the finest forwards of his day. Pacy, strong overhead and a smooth ball handler he regularly amassed high goal tallies for his time, including 8 on two occasions, against Geelong in 1904 and against St Kilda in 1908. A VFL interstate representative in 1903 and 1904 he skippered Melbourne in 1907 and 1910-11. Between 1901 and 1911 he played 152 VFL games and kicked 212 goals. His tally of 39 goals in 1904 was good enough to top the league list.
