William Roberts - typically referred to as Billy - joined St Kilda from Oakleigh in 1928 and after commencing his VFL career as a half back flanker he migrated to the wing before transforming into one of the finest centremen in the league. Solid overhead and a booming kick, he was relentlessly determined and as effective defensively as he was when taking or sending the ball deep into the forward lines. He represented Victoria on half a dozen occasions.
