Wylie Chambers was just 17 when he made his league debut for South Melbourne in round three, 1946. He made 11 senior appearances that year but when he played just once in 1947 he sought a transfer to Williamstown. This, however, was refused, and over the next three seasons he established himself as a regular senior player with the southerners. Probably best described as a utility, he played most of his football in defence, particularly during his last couple of seasons.

In 1951, after 48 VFL games and seven goals for South, he crossed to Oakleigh, where he finished his career. Just two years later he suddenly fell ill and died at the age of just 24.
