Hawthorn recruited Peter Bennett from Pakenham but he struggled to have an impact, managing just 13 VFL games and five goals in 1976 and 1977. He fared much better at his next port of call, the Essendon Football Club. A true spare parts player, he could be relied on to perform strongly wherever he was deployed, and was particularly effective when allowed to run unfettered as an on-baller. He played in Essendon’s 1981 night premiership team as a ruck-rover, and all told played 67 VFL games and booted 22 goals for the club from 1978 to 1981. He finished his league career with Subiaco in the WAFL but only managed to add a single senior game to his tally before retiring.
