Originally from Canberra, where he played junior football for West Canberra, Adam Garton moved to Adelaide in the late 1970s in order to study. He also continued his football career by joining Glenelg and progressing through the grades until making his senior SANFL debut in 1982. Between 1982 and 1986 as well as in 1989 he played a total of 90 games for the Bays and kicked 72 goals. His appearances included the grand final defeats of North Adelaide in 1985 and 1986, in the former of which he booted four goals. In 1987 and 1988 he played three games and kicked one goal for Brisbane.
