After playing seconds football with Carlton Alan Crawford entered the League arena with North Melbourne in 1936. He went on to play 77 VFL games and kick 39 goals for the club in three separate stints, the last of which ended in 1949. Hefty and powerful, he played most of his football as a follower.

Between 1939 and 1941 he played for South Adelaide, while he later went to Tasmania and captain-coached Launceston in 1946 and Penguin the following year.

Crawford, who won the Hawthorn best and fairest award in 1944, played interstate football for both South Australia and Victoria.
