West Adelaide centreman Aldo Rossetto boasted “an agility surprising in one built like a strong man” as well as good all round skills. His prowess was recognised with a joint club best and fairest award in 1956, and yet his playing career can only be described as spasmodic and fleeting. He played just 66 games for West in 1952-3, from 1955 to 1958 and in 1960-1, followed by seven appearances with South Adelaide in 1962. During his time with the Blood ‘n’ Tars he combined spells of sublime brilliance with displays of perplexing anonymity, causing him on more than one occasion to be dropped to the seconds. All in all, perhaps, his career stands as testimony to the fact that success in football is not just about raw talent; it is every bit as much about mentality.
