In 1988 Alex McDonald was the first pick in the National Draft. He made his AFL debut for Hawthorn in 1990 but struggled to establish himself. After 46 games and 24 goals in six seasons in the brown and gold he crossed to Collingwood where the change of air clearly did him good as he produced the best football of his career, and was a regular in the side. Playing mostly as a tagger his distribution of the ball, whether by hand or foot, was first rate. In 1999, after 61 games and 20 goals for the Magpies, hip problems forced his premature retirement.
