The only player of the surname to play V/AFL football, Alf Hedge came from Sandringham Amateurs to play 16 games as rover for South Melbourne in 1937 and 1938 before joining the Royal Australian Air Force in World War II. He lost his life aged just 24 when his plane was shot down over Hamburg in Germany in 1942.
