Playing mainly as a permanent forward pocket Alf Hurley helped himself to numerous goals over the course of a career spanning almost a decade. After playing for Port Melbourne CYMS and then Port Melbourne in the VFA he made his senior VFL debut for Hawthorn in 1935, the first of 36 games he would play for the club over three and a half seasons. He booted 60 goals. Part of the way through the 1938 season he crossed to Fitzroy and added another 16 appearances and 24 goals during that year and the next. He later made a fleeting return to the VFL with St Kilda, for whom he played a single goalless game in 1942, with the interim period being spent back at Port Melbourne, where he ultimately played 61 VFA games and booted 98 goals.
