Arch Dickens played initially for Preston, which was not in the VFA at the time, before joining Fitzroy in 1923. Although never an automatic choice for the seniors he managed to play 64 VFL games and score 24 goals for the club over eight seasons. In the 1923 challenge final loss to Essendon he lined up on a wing, although he could also play in other positions, notably half forward. He finished his career in 1932 at Melbourne for whom he played 13 games and kicked seven goals.
