Ashley Prescott, the son of former St Kilda player David Prescott, was a highly dependable utility whose creative use of handball was perhaps the most noteworthy feature of his play. His progress through the ranks at Richmond was somewhat slow because he was such a frequent victim of injury, but he finally made his senior debut in round twenty-one 1993 not long before his twenty-first birthday. Some of his best football was played as a tagger, a role which highlighted his excellent powers of concentration and dogged determination. When the Tigers made a rare major round appearance in 1995 he replaced the injured Tony Free and was an excellent contributor over the course of three finals matches. The Richmond phase of his AFL career, which concluded in 1998, saw him play 90 games and kick 15 goals.

The 1999 season saw Prescott at Fremantle where he served as a mentor to the club's younger players and won the best clubman award in his debut season. He went on to play 38 games and kick 4 goals for the Dockers from 1999 to 2001 whilst simultaneously making some appearances for South Fremantle when not selected for Freo. He continued with the southerners in 2002 before finishing his league career at Claremont in 2003. Between 2004 and 2007 he was non-playing coach of Claremont, steering the side as far as the grand final in 2004, 2005 and 2007 only for them to suffer defeat each time.
