Highly skilled, strong overhead (despite standing just 170cm in height) and an excellent exponent of the place kick, Athol Sharp played most of his career at Carlton as a rover, although somewhat surprisingly, given his build, he also lined up at full forward on occasion. From 1913 to 1916 and in 1920 he played 56 VFL games and scored 41 goals for the Blues. Forced to miss the 1914 grand final win over South Melbourne because of injury he experienced the ultimate in football the following year as Collingwood was conclusively put to the sword, 11.12 to 6.9.
