Ben Rutten was a fine player over 12 seasons for Adelaide after making his AFL debut as a forward in 2003. Most of his football was played in defence, however, and there were few better one-on-one defenders in the competition during his career. By the time of his retirement after the 2014 season Ben Rutten, who was drafted to the Crows from West Adelaide, had played a total of 229 AFL games and kicked nine goals, with his career highlight coming in 2005 when he was chosen at full back in the AFL All Australian team. Rutten was a member of West Adelaide's losing Grand Final team against Central District in 2003.
