After playing for Norwood’s Association team in 1927, and winning an award for the best and most consistent player, Bert Heffernan made his League debut late the following season. A rover with a penchant for kicking goals, his play combined pluck and dash in ample measure. When the Redlegs downed Port Adelaide by 41 points in the 1929 grand final Heffernan was one of the victors’ best performers.
Between 1928 and 1933 Bert Heffernan played 80 SANFL games and booted 123 goals.
