Bert Hurrey holds a distinction which will never be eclipsed. Between 1908 and 1913 he played 101 VFL games for University, which is a club record; indeed, he was the only University player to exceed 100 games.

As a player, Hurrey was extremely versatile, equally capable of holding down a set position or roving. In 1912, when playing as a centreman, he was widely rated as the best in that position in the league.
