William Davies began and ended his senior playing career with Williamstown in the VFA and spent the interim period, 1905 to 1909, with VFL powerhouse Essendon. Lightly framed, lightning fast and lithe, he was chiefly utilised as a wingman, in which position he was among the Same Old’s best in their grand final loss to Carlton in 1908.

Davies played twice for Victoria, against Ballarat in 1905 and East Fremantle in 1909, the second of which was his last ever game as a VFL footballer.

After playing for Williamstown in 1910, taking his games played tally to 57, and the number of goals kicked to three, he commenced a career as a VFA umpire in 1912. During his initial stint with Williamstown he represented the VFA against South Australia twice.
