North Adelaide recruited Bill Lokan from Walkerville and he gave the Roosters good service, mainly as a centreman, in 51 SANFL games between 1979 and 1982. The 1983 season saw him playing VFL football with Fitzroy and after a tentative start he earned a reputation as a highly skilful, eye-catching performer. He was a key player for the Lions when they went all the way to the preliminary final in 1986. By the end of his VFL career in 1988 he had played a total of 87 games and kicked 40 goals. He was only 28 when he retired as a player but he did so because he felt he needed a break from football and he also had injury concerns. With the exception of a season spent coaching South Clare he has had no involvement in the game since.
