Glorying in the nickname ‘Snob’, Polglaise was one of, if not the, finest ruckmen on the goldfields for an entire decade prior to World War I. Tall for the period, at 191 cm, he was a knock ruckman par excellence, and was seldom beaten over the course of a full game. In 1914-15 he was a member of arguably the greatest goldfields club combination ever as, in an extremely strong competition, Mines Rovers went ‘back to back’.
Polglaise was one of three Mines players selected to represent Western Australia at the inaugural Australasian championship series in Melbourne in 1908.
