Bob Bovell probably was the first forward to achieve great accuracy with a torpedo punt, at which he was a specialist.¹
North Fremantle only had a comparatively brief involvement in the WAFL but the club was home to a fair number of high quality footballers, one of whom was full forward Bob Bovell. A highly accomplished exponent of the torpedo punt he was said to be unfailingly accurate when kicking for goal from distances up to fifty metres. It is not known precisely how many goals he kicked over the course of his career as such records were not assiduously kept at the time. It is known, however, that he played a total of 89 games for North between 1902 and 1912.
Away from football Bob Bovell was a high quality rope quoits player.
