A forward early in his career, Bob Deas later developed into a first rate full back. Recruited by South Melbourne from Leopold, he debuted in 1909 and at season's end was a member of the team which downed Carlton by two points in the challenge final. Deas played at centre half forward in that much, but when the southerners next contested a premiership decider in 1912 he had made the aforementioned move to full back. He played in a third grand final, once again at full back, in 1914, when he was one of the best players on view as South went down by a goal against Carlton.

From 1909 to 1915 and in 1917 Deas played 111 VFL games and booted 73 goals.
