Of quite diminutive build at 170cm and 65kg Brian Beal belied this with his energy, determination and commitment which enabled him to outpoint many bigger opponents. Playing as a wingman, he attracted considerable acclaim right from the outset of his playing career in 1959. In his second season, aged 20, he won Glenelg’s best and fairest award, and thereafter continued to be a conspicuous performer for the team until his retirement in 1964, by which time he had played 70 SANFL games and kicked eight goals.
