A product of the Central Broken Hill Football Club, Brian Wells was a tough customer who marked and kicked well, and boasted clean ball handling skills. He was also versatile. He arrived at Norwood in 1954 and went on to play 75 games and kick 74 goals for the club in two stints (1954-5 and 1959-60). During the interim he captain-coached North Broken Hill, winning a competition best and fairest award in 1957, and representing New South Wales at the 1958 Melbourne carnival. During his time with the Redlegs he played in the losing grand finals of 1955 against Port Adelaide and 1960 against North Adelaide.
