Solid and dependable rather than flamboyant or spectacular, Bruce Nyland was a useful but comparatively unsung member of Port Adelaide teams for over a decade. Equally at home on the wing or a flank, he played 165 SANFL games for the Magpies and kicked 44 goals between 1962 and 1972. He was a member of the club’s winning grand final team against Sturt in 1965, and among the best players afield in the grand final losses to the same team in 1966 and 1968. He had his best year in 1970 when he finished runner-up in the club’s best and fairest count. Boasting considerable pace and always hard at the ball, he regularly collected plenty of possessions which he typically used to good effect.
