George Challis, a pacy and highly skilled wingman, commenced his senior football career in 1909 with Launceston and was a member the same year of the club’s NTFA premiership-winning team. In 1911 he represented Tasmania at the Adelaide carnival after which he was awarded the Bibby Trophy as his team’s best player in the competition.

The 1912 season saw Challis at Carlton where he played 70 games and kicked 16 goals in four seasons. A Victorian interstate representative in 1912, he rounded off his career in the best way imaginable by being one of the Blues’ best in their 11.12 to 6.9 grand final defeat of Collingwood.

George Challis went on to enlist and serve abroad in the AIF. He died in action in March 1916 aged just twenty-six.
