Charlie Goding commenced his VFL career in the competition's inaugural year of 1897 but he only played 4 games and did not continue with the club in 1898. The 1899 season saw him resuming his VFL career with South Melbourne, for whom he played 65 games and kicked 60 goals over half a dozen seasons, initially as a defender, but later as a clever and elusive forward. He was at centre half back when South Melbourne lost the 1899 Grand Final to Fitzroy by a point, and also played in the backlines for the VFL against South Australia in 1901. Goding later played in the VFA with Essendon Association.
