Recruited locally from Albert Park, Charlie James made his VFL debut with South Melbourne in 1899. He was on a half forward flank in that year's Grand Final against Fitzroy, which the southerners lost by a point. Later he developed into one of the best full backs in the league, especially renowned for his superb kicking. By the time he retired in 1904 he had played a total of 78 VFL games and kicked 13 goals.
